Andrew Young claims a historic World Cup bronze in Cross Country and Dave Ryding in World Cup action tomorrow

British Nordic Team

British Nordic Team athlete Andrew Young made history this weekend after he became the first Briton to podium in a World Cup Cross Country sprint race. In Saturday’s Freestyle Sprint in Toblach, Italy, Young qualified in first seeding place for the final as he produced world-class performances in the prologue and the semi-final. Then after leading for part of the final, he eventually finished in bronze medal position behind Italy’s Frederico Pellegrino and Simeon Hamilton of the USA.

Andrew Young said after the race: "That was a pretty amazing day. My aim for the day was to make the semi-finals, but I felt good and my skis were excellent, so making it through to the finals was actually pretty straightforward. 

"In the final I made an attack around halfway which worked, but then I tired on the last hill and the other two (Pellegrino and Hamilton) came past and I ended third. I am still delighted though. It was a brilliant day and it hasn't actually sunk in yet!"

Young’s teammates Andrew Musgrave and Annika Taylor also featured in Saturday’s sprint races, finishing in 60th and 54th respectively. Then in yesterday’s 15km Classic, Musgrave finished in 37th and Young in 47th.  In the ladies 10km Classic, Annika Taylor finished in 51st position.

Over in Hochfilzen, British Nordic Elite Squad athlete Callum Smith had his best result of the Alpen Cup races in the 15km Classic, finishing in 55th position. And for Performance Squad athlete Fiona Hughes she had three good results in Hochfilzen, with her best finish being 33rd in the 10km Classic.

Delancey British Alpine Team

Alex Tilley was racing in yesterday’s World Cup GS in Courchevel. Despite getting down safely in her first run, she didn’t manage to qualify for the second run. Austrian Eva-Maria Brem eventually won the race. Tilley will race next in Lienz, Austria on 28th and 29th December in the GS and Slalom World Cup races. For the men, Dave Ryding takes on his next Slalom World Cup tomorrow in Madonna di Campiglio where he will try and better his career-best 12th place that he clinched last week in Val d’Isere. The action is being shown on Eurosport, with the first run starting at 16.45 GMT and the second run at 19.45 GMT.

British Aerials Team

British Aerials skier Lloyd Wallace tackled his first World Cup on a 41 metre-tall scaffolding structure in the iconic Bird’s Nest stadium in Beijing this weekend.  Performing a lay double-full full in Saturday’s competition, Lloyd took 26th position. On Sunday he couldn’t quite better his result from the previous day, taking 27th place. Lloyd’s impressive tricks, however, mean that he is now firmly in a league with the senior men with two types of triple twisting triples.

British Ski Cross

Emily Sarsfield returned to competition in the Ski Cross Europa Cup in Val Thorens, France. After qualifying for finals on Thursday, she finished in 15th place, but unfortunately fell, putting her out of Friday’s race. In Saturday’s FIS race Isobel Brown finishing a respectable 17th place in the ladies competition, with Matthew Ray finishing 45th and Sam Gerrett 46th in the men’s competition.

GB Park and Pipe

After impressive performances from the GB Park and Pipe team at the Dew Tour and Rev Tour in Colorado, it was all about BBC Sports Personality of the Year for Molly Summerhayes, who was shortlisted for the Young SPOTY award. She was joined on the night by sister Katie, and snowboarders Aimee Fuller and Jenny Jones. Gymnast Ellie Downie took the overall prize of Young SPOTY, but it was a proud evening for British snowsports to have an athlete shortlisted for such a prestigious award.
