The BRITS wraps up and Jan Farrell finishes 6th in Overall Speed Ski World Cup Standings

The BRITS concluded in Laax on Saturday with a final Gold medal for GB Park and Pipe’s Madi Rowlands in the Ski Bangers and Cash, adding to her medal haul, following her Ski Halfpipe Gold on Friday and Ski Slopestyle Silver earlier in the week.

On Friday Peter Speight clinched a victory over GB Park and Pipe teammate Murray Buchan to claim the Men’s Ski Halfpipe British title. Matt McCormick was crowned British Champion in the Men’s Snowboard Bangers and Cash Rail competition which also ran on Friday.

The GB Park and Pipe team now head to Stubai, Austria for spring training on the glacier.

British Speed Skiing

British Speed Skier Jan Farrell rounded off what he described as a ‘rollercoaster’ season with two 12th places at the Idre Speed Ski World Cup Finals in Sweden. After a recent crash in Vars, France at 216kph, Farrell did well to start the race at the weekend. The two results mean that Farrell finishes the season in 6th place in the overall World Cup ranking.

British Moguls Team

There was a brilliant result from Thomas Gerken Schofield at the Moguls World Junior Championships this weekend in Are, Sweden. Thomas finished in 11th place in the Singles competition, with teammate Will Feneley finishing in 29th. In the Dual Moguls, Feneley was the top Brit in 27th, with Gerken Schofield in 29th and Sam Houston in 34th position.

Delancey British Alpine Team

Up at the Scottish FIS races in Nevis Range on Friday, Euan Kick took to the top of the men’s podium with two Slalom wins, with Francesca Lee winning the first race, and Alexandra Taylor winning the second in the Ladies’. Over the weekend, the races moved to Cairngorm, where Alex Tilley stormed both Saturday and Sunday’s Slalom’s taking the wins, whilst Richard Goldsworthy finished first on Saturday and Euan Kick returned to the top step in Sunday’s Slalom.

Charlie Guest will take on the Swiss Slalom FIS races in Samnaun tomorrow and Wednesday, hoping to continue her recent success on the European FIS circuit.

Several of Guest’s British team mates will be racing in the Solda Slalom races tomorrow and Wednesday in Italy, followed by GS on Thursday and Friday, watch this space for results!

FIS International Alpine Youth Races

Twenty U16 & U14 racers finished their competitive season of FIS International Youth Racing in Val d’Isere, France and Abetone, Italy last week and over the weekend. In Val d’Isere Megan Riley had the best result of the weekend finishing in 28th place in the Under 16 Slalom, with teammate Olivia Foster in 36th place. In the Under 14 girls Super G, Sophie Foster finished in 37th place and in the Under 16 boys slalom, Owen Vinter was 31st and Alasdair Sandland in 32nd position.
In Abetone, the under 14s and under 16s tackled the Slalom on Friday, followed by the GS on Saturday. In the Slalom Eleanor Scranage Harrison finished in 25th position in the girls race with Ross Nesbitt in a strong 22nd place.
In the GS, for the Under 14s the best-placed athlete was Eleanor Scranage Harrison who finished in 26th place. For the boys, Max Pini was 27th, Ted Slade finished joint 41st, and Ross Nesbitt skied into 45th. For the Under 16s, Charlotte Tapsell finished in 27th and Shana Danenbergsons in 37th position in the girls race, and for the boys, Oliver Weeks finished in 42nd place and Scott Waitt was 44th.

British Nordic Team

Last week saw the FIS and Junior Cross Country races in Bruksvallarna, Sweden. Duncan Gibb, Brodie Murray and Jordan Andrews enjoyed the spring conditions of Sweden. Following some strong results last week, over the weekend Duncan Gibb put in the strongest result for British Nordic, finishing 29th in the 30km race (Under 20 category), finishing just 8.9% off the winner and knocking 12 minutes off his previous year’s time. Brodie Murray was 97th in the same race and Jordan Andrews 51st in the FIS category.

British Ski Cross

Following the Ski Cross World Juniors, Will Wheeler, Scott Garvie and Laurence Willows will be heading over to Idre Fjall in Sweden for the FIS races tomorrow followed by the Europa Cup races on Wednesday and Thursday.

James Woodsy Woods has secured his best result of the season, clinching a fantastic 3rd place at the European Freeski Open in Laax, Switzerland. Throwing down an impressive performance on the slopestyle course, Woodsy broke his run of 4th place finishes to claim a podium finish against world-class field in the prestigious competition.

In the ladies' competition at the European Freeski Open, Izzy Atkin followed up her recent run of strong results to claim an impressive 4th place in Laax with teammate Katie Summerhayes finishing in 9th in the semis.

The competition was also excellent competition experience for Cal Sandieson and GB Park and Pipe Pathway skiers: Harris Booth, Monty Wright and Chris McCormick.

At the World Championships of Snowboarding in Yabuli International Ski Resort, China, Katie Ormerod finished a solid 3rd place in the Slopestyle semi-finals, taking her through to tomorrow’s finals. After qualifying well for the semis, Aimee Fuller couldn’t quite put the runs in to finish in the top 6, which was the qualifying standard for the final. In the Big Air semis, Katie Ormerod finished in 7th place, narrowly missing out on finals and Aimee couldn’t quite land a clean run after trying her cab underflip. The level was high with two riders performing cab double underflips.

Henry Shackleton and Matt McCormick are in Flachau, Austria, for 2016’s Spring Battle, a World Snowboard Tour Slopestyle event, in which a follow cam jam session is held over the week, with the best runs submitted for judging. Aimee Fuller will be joining them directly from China.

Nine Queens in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis, Austria, has kicked off, with the action lasting all week. Katie Summerhayes has arrived in resort and is ready to tackle the impressive looking course. She will be joined by Jenny Jones, and also Katie Ormerod who will fly in directly from China.

Delancey British Alpine Ski Team

Dave Ryding was competing in the in the Oberjoch Europa Cup Slalom yesterday In Germany where he came 6th place - +0.73 off the winner.

In Spain Dave will compete in the La Molina Europa Cup Slalom on Thursday, alongside Delancey Alpine team mate Charlie Guest, who will take on the Ladies’ Giant Slalom on Wednesday and Slalom on Thursday.

Dave will then move on to Switzerland to the FIS Alpine World Cup Finals in St Moritz, which kick off today. The Men’s Slalom will be taking place on Sunday.

Over in the US, Jack Gower is competing in the Nor Am Race Series in Aspen, Colarado. Gower finished 13th in yesterday’s Downhill and will compete in the Super G, which runs today, and the Giant Slalom on Thursday.

The Delancey British National Alpine Ski Championships kick off this Sunday, with all the top names in British Alpine Skiing descending on the French resort of Tignes for a week of Senior and Junior racing.

British Ski Cross

Emily Sarsfield rounded off her racing season on a high, claiming a podium in the FIS Europa Cup in St Francois Longchamp, France. After winning the small final to finish 5th in the first race, Emily put in a storming performance to qualify for the final and finish in 3rd position in the second race. A great conclusion to the season.

British Nordic Team

The conclusion of the ‘Ski Tour Canada’ in Canmore saw Andrew Musgrave finish 36th in the overall standings, after an impressive 18th place finish in Friday’s 10km Freestyle. He followed that up with 36th in the 15km Pursuit.

Annika Taylor had a fantastic Ski Tour Canada, finishing 42nd overall, after a 45th in the 10km Freestyle and then 42nd in the 10km Pursuit.

British Speed Skiing

Jan Farrell secured two 8th place finishes at the FIS Speed Skiing World Cup in Grandvalira, Andorra over the weekend. Jan is eager to improve on last season:

"We’ve had two great races in Andorra, with extremely cold conditions and compression in the track. I was 2kmh off the podium on both days so I’m extremely focused on the next race in Vars, where my objective is to beat the British speed record of 245kmh.”

"Last season it was important to gain experience and a better understanding of the top category and although I achieved a personal best in Vars, I’m hungry to exceed expectations and reach podium status this year.”

British Telemark

At the Telemark World Cup in Rjukan, Norway, Jaz Taylor put in two strong performances to finish 4th and 6th in the two Ladies' Sprint races. Alistair Cruz-Mermy claimed the best British result in the mens' races, with 18th place in the Men’s Sprint. Teammate Louis Hatchwell finished in a close 19th position. The second race saw Louis as the fastest Brit, claiming 20th place.

GB Park and Pipe’s halfpipe skiers raised the bar in Tignes yesterday as they notched up some of their best results of the season in the final FIS Ski Halfpipe World Cup this season.

Shortly after being named Sky Sports’ Sportswoman of the Month, Madi Rowlands continued her amazing form with a 10th place with teammate Rowan Cheshire finishing in 12th position. In the men’s competition, Murray Buchan pulled out an amazing 13th place scoring his highest run of the season, with teammates James Machon in 16th and Pete Speight in 17th.

The action kicks off today in Laax for the European Freeski Open. The best Slopestyle skiers in the world will battle it out on the Slopestyle course over three days. Representing GB Park and Pipe in Laax is James Woodsy Woods, Katie Summerhayes, Izzy Atkin, Madi Rowlands and Cal Sandieson. They will be joined by GB Park and Pipe Pathway skiers Harris Booth, Monty Wright and Chris McCormick.

Aimee Fuller and Katie Ormerod are in China for the World Championships of Snowboarding. Yabuli International Ski Resort will host the World Snowboard Federation event. Pre-qualifications begin today with Women’s Big Air finals on Sunday and Slopestyle finals on Tuesday.

British Nordic Team

At the ‘Ski Tour Canada’, part of the Cross Country World Cup, Annika Taylor finished in a fantastic 44th position in Wednesday’s 7.5km Skiathlon and 55th position in Tuesday’s Sprint Classic Final in Canmore.

Andrew Musgrave was 42nd in the 15km Skiathlon and 57th in the Sprint Classic Final. In the same Sprint race Andrew Young finished in 43rd place.

The Ski Tour Canada concludes on Friday and Saturday in Canmore with a Men’s 15km Freestyle and Ladies 10km Freestyle, followed by a Men’s 15km Classic and a Ladies 10km Classic Pursuit.

Delancey British Alpine Ski Team

After Dave Ryding’s qualification for the FIS World Cup Finals in St Moritz, he reacted with the following statement:

"I have achieved something more than I ever dreamt of as a child. It was an incredibly proud moment realising I had made it to the World Cup Finals!

It has been an incredible season and to take part in every single 2nd run of the World Cup Slalom series this season says a lot... I didn't always get my best skiing out there but I was always there to give it a go.

The great thing is I now get another shot and the 2016 World Cup circuit continues for myself to St Moritz.”

The World Cup Finals kick off next Monday, with the Men’s Slalom taking place on Sunday 20 March.

Before St Moritz, Dave will compete this weekend in Germany, in the Oberjoch Europa Cup Slalom, which takes place on Sunday.

Yesterday saw Charlie Raposo and Max Baggio take on the GS at Bad Hofgastein FIS races, Austria finishing with 6th and 30th place respectively.

At the FIS International Youth Races in Topolino Italy, there were four top 20 finishes the Under 16 and Under 14 racers. The top results came from Sarah Woodward, Joe Christy, Alicja Krahelski and Sienna Horton. British Speed Skiing

The British Speed Skiing Team are in Grandvalira, Andorra for the next FIS Speed Skiing World Cup. Training is already underway, with the first race starting tomorrow.

British Telemark

The Telemark World Cup in Rjukan, Norway starts today with Jaz Taylor and the rest of the Great Britain team looking to make their mark.

British Ski Cross

Following her World Cup racing, Emily Sarsfield has been competing in the St Francois Longchamp Europa Cup this week, with two qualification races on Wednesday. Emily finished 7th in the first race, and 9th in the second. The finals for Race 1 took place today with Emily finishing 5th. Race 2 finals run tomorrow with Emily looking to make the "big final".

An inspiring weekend for British Ski and Snowboard with top 15 finishes across the board

GB Park and Pipe athletes showed that they are amongst the best riders in the world with 8 top 12 places over the past few days.

On Friday James ‘Woodsy’ Woods put down two impressive runs to take 4th place at the Slopestyle World Cup in Silvaplana. This meant he finished 4th overall in the Slopestyle World Cup standings. Fresh from the Youth Olympics, 17 year old Cal Sandieson finished 25th in his first ever Slopestyle World Cup. In the ladies competition Izzy Atkin finished in 8th place after qualifying in an amazing second place earlier in the day. Katie Summerhayes finished 10th overall just missing out on finals due to a bit over shoot, and our youngest team member Madi Rowlands, inher World Cup debut, finishing 12th place.

Over in the USA at the Burton US Open, Katie Ormerod took a fantastic 5th place performing a Cab 9, Front 3 and Back 7 in the 16 girl Superfinal after qualifiers were cancelled Jamie Anderson took the win amongst a world-class field.

Over in Austria, Henry Shackleton was top of the podium at the Shred Down Austrian Masters, with GB Park and Pipe teammate Jamie Trinder finishing in third. Just behind them was Matt McCormick who narrowly missed out on the podium.

Rowan Coultas and Fin Bremner were in Saint Lary in the French Pyrenees for the Poney Sessions today with Rowan finishing in 4th and Fin in 9th.

This week sees the GB Park and Pipe halfpipe skiers compete in the Halfpipe World Cup in Tignes, France. Murray Buchan, Pete Speight and James Machon compete on Wednesday for the men, and Rowan Cheshire and Madi Rowlands compete on Thursday in the ladies competition.

Aimee Fuller and Katie Ormerod are in China for the World Championships of Snowboarding. Yabuli International Ski Resort will host the World Snowboard Federation event. The action kicks off on Wednesday.

British Nordic Team

At the ‘Ski Tour Canada’, part of the Cross Country World Cup, Annika Taylor, Andrew Young and Andrew Musgrave have all had success in the first three stages in Gatineau, Montreal and Quebec.

There were excellent results in the Men’s Sprint Freestyle final for both Young and Musgrave taking 14th and 15th place respectively. This was followed by an excellent 18th in the 15km Freestyle Pursuit for Musgrave and a 38th for Andrew Young.

Annika Taylor sealed a PB with 49th in Friday’s Sprint Freestyle final , finishing in 50th in the 10km Freestyle Pursuit the following day.

The next stage in the Ski Tour Canada will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday in Canmore. The Tour then concludes on Friday and Saturday with the final action on the same course in Canmore.

Delancey British Alpine Ski Team

Dave Ryding was back in action at the Slalom World Cup in Kransjka Gora, Slovenia, yesterday where he finished in 24th position,,+3.05 off the winner Marcel Hirscher. He has now officially qualified for the World Cup Finals later this month, a huge feat for the Brit.

Alex Tilley, who is currently competing in the Far East Cup Race series in Japan has had five fantastic results, taking to the top of the podium with a win in the GS in Nozawa Onsen on Friday, and again yesterday in the Slalom in Shigakogen. These followed a 2nd place in the Nozawa Onsen GS on Thursday and a further two 2nd places in the Hakuba Slalom earlier on in the week.

At the World Junior Alpine Championships in Sochi, Russia, unfortunately Billy Major and Charlie Raposo both DNF in Saturday’s Slalom. Both will now look to the Delancey British Alpine Championships in Tignes coming up in a couple of weeks.

The FIS International Youth Races in Folgaria, Italy, saw 4 top 20 finishes with Alicja Krahelski and Joseph Christey finishing in 20th and 19th place in their respective U16 and U14 GS races. Both Sienna Horton and Sarah Woodward also bagged top 20 places finishing in 19th and 15th place in the U14 and U16 Slalom. British Ski Cross

At the Ski Cross World Cup in Arosa, Switzerland last Friday, Emily Sarsfield finished in 22nd place after finishing third in her race. After a tricky start she couldn’t quite make it through to the quarterfinals, after being squeezed down into third place. This was Emily’s last World Cup of the season.

British Speed Skiing

At the Speed Skiing World Cup in Sun Peaks, Canada Jan Farrell secured his best ever World Cup result in the unlimited S1 category when he took 5th place. With high winds, the race took place in tricky conditions, then the following day’s racing got cancelled. Team mate Elliot Capper finished 7th in Fridays’s race. British Telemark

Jaz Taylor, Louis Hatchwell, Alistair Cruz and Robert Houstoun were at two World Cups in Germany and Golte, Slovenia last week. The best result in Slovenia came from Jaz Taylor who came 6th in the Sprint race. The next World Cup starts on 10th March in Rjukan in Norway.

In the Moena, Italy, SBX FIS races, Maisie Potter finished an impressive 3rd place after winning four intense heats including a semi-final rerun.

Speed Skier Jan Farrell Chases World Cup Podium Glory

British speed skier, Jan Farrell, has kicked off the 2016 ski season with his sights firmly fixed on a podium finish at this year’s unlimited S1 category FIS World Cup. As he enters his second season in the competition, Jan has set an ambitious goal of achieving 250kmh on skis, aiming to break Marc Poncin’s 11 year British record of 245.230km/h.

During Jan’s first season in the S1 category, the fast-moving Brit reached a personal best speed of 143.946m/h during a World Record attempt in Vars, making him the third fastest speed skier in British history and number one in 2015 – all in his first year of competing in the sport.

This year’s World Cup competition, which commences on 2nd March in Sun Peaks, Canada, will see the Lancastrian in hot pursuit of current speed skiing record holder Simone Origone, who along with Jan became the only ski racer to pass the 200km/h barrier last season.

In preparation for Canada, Jan has bolstered his team to include aeronautic experts, professional ski coaches and a multidisciplinary medical team; as well as numerous manufacturers to assist in the build of his specialist equipment. Thanks to biomechanical studies, analysis of race and training video feedback, and Cambridge University wind-tunnel intelligence, Jan has been able to develop specific training techniques by separately controlling the speed and power of the concentric and eccentric phases of each exercise – allowing him to better prepare for the physical and mental challenges ahead.

A sport that requires perfect balance, strength and nerves of steel, skiers need to ensure equipment is of the highest quality and be armed with the latest technology. In order to maintain a more aerodynamic position and reduce drag coefficient, Jan has joined forces with Swiss textile producer Schoeller and French ski equipment factory Jonathan & Fletcher to launch a new type of speed suit made out of a mixture of polyester, polyurethane and elastodiene – increasing flexibility and creating a sleeker approach to the slopes.

Commenting on his upcoming World Cup aspirations, Jan said: “Last season it was important to gain experience and a better understanding of the top category and, although I achieved a personal best in Vars, I’m hungry to exceed expectations and reach podium status this year.

“The surrounding environment really changes at these high speeds and the equipment required to succeed is completely different, therefore we’ve worked hard to invest in training and R&D for the season ahead, taking every detail into account.”

Following the first stage of the S1 category FIS World Cup, the competition will move to Andorra for the ‘flying kilometre’ stage of the race, which is due to take place between 10th and 13th March.
