The final countdown: just 100 days to PyeongChang

The final countdown has begun as the calendar today ticked within 100 days until the start of the Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, Korea.

For members of the British Ski and Snowboard team, the day provides a stark reminder that the biggest and most exciting challenge of their sporting careers is just around the corner.

And with programmes across all disciplines which are far improved from years gone by, British snowsports enters this Olympic campaign with more confidence than ever before.

Dan Hunt, BSS Performance Director, knows that Jenny Jones’ medal-winning breakthrough in Sochi brings with it great expectations for the entire team but is confident that the groundwork has been laid to deliver strong results throughout the Games campaign.

“We’ve had a great summer across the board; some of the programmes we’ve set up are developing really, really well,” said Hunt. “We’re just in a much better place than we were before.”

A host of BSS athletes have been in London this week for The Telegraph Ski and Snowboard Show, Olympic orientations and a team press day, with Hunt witnessing a distinctly positive difference in the overall atmosphere of the team despite the tests which lay ahead over the coming months.

“You can tell everyone is a lot happier, the team is more cohesive and we know where we’re at,” said Hunt. “And I think that the reason they seem a bit more relaxed is they genuinely feel like we’re doing everything we can.

“Not that long ago there were a lot of gaps in the various programmes, but we’ve filled the gaps now and are moving forward.

“We’ve done a lot in the last 10 or 11 months, a huge amount of change, and it’s all been very, very positively received.

“We’re going to go to PyeongChang and have a really good run at it. If we turn up on the line with athletes that are happy, healthy and haven’t picked up any injuries through the season then I think we can have a good Games.

“We’ve got some great opportunities, but at the moment they’re just opportunities. What we’ve got to now do over the next 100 days, is do everything we can to convert what is an opportunity (at the moment) into a great performance.”
